Fishing is becoming better… all around. As everyone must have heard Giant Bluefin Tuna are making their migratory run off of NJ and Long Island, with Giant Bluefin up to 650lbs being caught in nearshore waters, Rockaway Reef area, Hempstead Reef area and even Fire Island Reef area. NOAA has shut down the fishing for these giant trophy fish. For the past several years during the first week or two of May these fish have been getting closer and closer to shore off of Long Island. It’s a pretty awesome event.
Striped Bass are now being caught with some size to them. There have been several report of slot fish being cause inside as well as outside. The bite IS NOT lights out, but its there. We haven’t targeted them on the outside as of yet but my sources tell me that they are deep and spoons seem to be doing the trick when the bite is on. I prefer Tony Maja Spoons.
The WEAKFISH are here! Keeper Weakfish are now being caught in the areas of Kismet, Ocean Beach, Point of Woods, south of West Sayville and Patchogue. This bite is warming up. The colors choices seem to be PINK mid-day, darker colors in the morning and at sunset. I suspect that as warmer weather moves in, this bite will ignite.
FLUKE are here so don’t sit on the sidelines and get out there. They are now up in the area of Tanners Park, Massapequa and west to Bellport and Mastic. You must find those drop offs. Also continue to fish the wash offs from the marshes. Many of these fish in the State Channel have shrimp in their bellies, so you should try to match the hatch and use shrimp or a bait that resembles shrimp.
Big Blues seem to be everywhere, but the bite is hot and cold. They seem to show up, then disappear, then show up again. They also seem to be mixed in or not swimming far behind the stripers. Plugs are crushing them in the shallows and chunk bait seems to be the preferred meal in deeper water.
We have ordered some Canyon Reels to fish this season. I bought a 4000 spincaster 2 years ago and its been one hell of a reliable reel. So I’m going to try out a few other styles this season.
